Replacing your Entrance Door on your Washington County Home

Pros and Cons of Wood, Metal or Fiberglass Replacement Door

I was queried the other day what I would suggest for a replacement of a front entry door. This is somewhat of a loaded question but being the professional contractor serving places in Washington County, I gave my view. Now stating that, I am not sure there is a right or wrong. With the wide variety of materials available front entry door options have come a long way. The doors most commonly replaced are the original wood doors. They often have cracked , rotted or just plain looks bad. A small warp in the door combined with old weather-stripping can produce a large air leak. You can put rags all along the door bottom or on the sides but the cold air will still come in.

Replacing this door with a new Full Replacement door is the right way. With a full replacement you start the whole process with a new door in a new frame with new weather-stripping, and an adjustable threshold. For this particular Washington County customer I suggested a new prehung fiberglass front entry door with a half round glass at the top.

Fiberglass was my choice because of the westerly exposure. Having no overhang on that wall means the sun will be beating on that door half the day. I felt that a wooden would look appealing but the sun will do harm to a wood substrate faster than anything else. A new steel door could have also been my pick by this particular person wanted a realistic looking wood-grain textured look. I think fiberglass looks the best.

These new replacement entrance doors in Washington County all can come from the manufacturer prefinished and ready to install. A variety of colors and stains are available for both inside and outside applications. Replacing the door as a full tear-out will give you new interior casing, new low expansion insulating foam, and an easy operating draft free door. If the inside and outside color schemes are not enough, you will also have to decide on glass or no glass. If you need to have glass for lighting and curb appeal, be prepared because the glass selections are infinite. Many styles and numerous specialty glass packages are available. Choose from brass, satin nickel, or patina caming, beveled glass, or even colored glass.

Your new entrance door could possibly be made into the focal point of your Washington County residence. Beautiful specialty glass packages stained or painted accenting exterior colors and a beautiful new lockset and deadbolt will help to showcase the front of your dwelling. Add a contrasting colored storm door and watch the opening pop.

Install the new entrance door correctly and the results will be noticeable immediately. No air leaks or water coming in under the door will make you say "why didn't we do this sooner". Plumb, square, and flat are the important factors for installing doors and windows. Fiberglass, wood, steel are the choices out there. Take into account sun exposure, roof or overhang protection, sunlight needs inside of the dwelling when choosing a door. Stained wood doors are beautiful but require maintenance, steel doors are tough but not the most realistic looking, and fiberglass doors look great and are durable. I can tell you we sell more fiberglass than anything else. The realistic woodgrain and the durability are a popular combination when selecting doors.
